Canadian National announced today the promotions of Claude Mongeau and James M. Foote to new executive positions.

Mongeau, 38, assumes the title of executive vice-president and chief financial officer. Foote, 46, becomes executive vice-president, sales and marketing. Prior to the promotions, Mongeau was senior vice-president and chief financial officer and Foote senior vice-president, sales and marketing. Their appointments are effective immediately.

CN President and Chief Executive Officer Paul M. Tellier said: "Claude and Jim have played leading roles in CN's financial turnaround and the successful implementation of its North American growth strategy.

"Claude has done a first-rate job in financial planning and maximizing cash flow and earnings from CN's asset base, including fiber optic ventures. Today, CN has the best operating ratio - percentage of revenue required to operate and maintain the railroad - of any North American railroad. Claude's skill set, along with his involvement in CN's privatization, network rationalization and real estate activities, makes him well suited to lead CN's strategic planning process.

"Jim's leadership has been key to the success of CN's aggressive marketing strategy. That strategy has seen a host of new intermodal and carload carload

Mongeau joined CN in May 1994 and has held the positions of vice-president, strategic and financial planning, and assistant vice-president corporate development. He was appointed chief financial officer in August 1999.

Mongeau received his undergraduate degree from the University of Quebec at Montreal and his master of business administration degree from McGill University in Montreal.

Foote joined CN in August 1995 as vice-president, investor relations, to assist the Company's privatization. He has been CN's vice-president of merchandise and vice-president, corporate development, investor relations and tax with the Chicago and North Western Railroad.
