.) today inaugurated its new Edmonton Intermodal Terminal at an official ceremony attended by senior executives, mayors and other community leaders.

The terminal, located on 370 acres of land adjacent to CN's transcontinental main line, provides truckers easy access to the Yellowhead Yellowhead (or TĂȘte Jaune) was the nickname of a furtrader and explorer. The Yellowhead Pass in the Rocky Mountains on the border between British Columbia and Alberta, and TĂȘte Jaune Cache, British Columbia are named after him.  Trail to reach key cities throughout Northern Alberta.

Paul M. Tellier, Canadian National's president and chief executive officer, said: "This new $25-million terminal strengthens our ability to provide Alberta shippers and receivers with efficient, reliable and truck-competitive rail transportation. Edmonton, the centre of our operations in Western Canada, is a key terminal for our transcontinental 'need for speed' intermodal trains that have made CN more truck like than ever before."

The terminal will operate seven days a week, with an initial annual capacity of 150,000 intermodal units. It is equipped with three front-lift mobile cranes and has seven tracks that can accommodate trains up to 12,000 feet long. Two pad tracks can handle full-length trains without switching.

Intermodal traffic -- one of CN's fastest-growing lines of business -- involves the transportation of containers and truck trailers by rail between inland hubs or to and from export ports. Containers can also be transported in the cargo holds of large aircraft.

CN has overhauled its intermodal schedules to serve shippers better. It has significantly improved transcontinental schedules, chopping almost 24 hours off intermodal transit times between Toronto and Winnipeg, Saskatoon Saskatoon (săskətn`), city (1991 pop. 186,058), S central Sask., Canada, on the South Saskatchewan River. , Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver.

Tellier said: "This new facility will make it even easier for our customers to do business with us by improving terminal efficiency and the rail-highway connection. Our expedited transcontinental services have been a major hit with shippers of time-sensitive products as well as parcel and less-than-truckload carriers. These segments demand quick reliable service to meet the needs of the ultimate customer."
