The department was established in 1994 following a reorganization within the federal government.  to facilitate and secure entry into Canada for pre-approved, low-risk air travelers.

As part of the first phase, CCRA installed the iA-thenticate(TM) BorderGuard(TM) platform at the 40 most heavily trafficked points of entry for major border crossings. In the second phase, CANPASS-Air checks travelers against a security system as if they were meeting an officer in person. The program, officially launched in July at Vancouver International Airport Vancouver International Airport (IATA: YVR, ICAO: CYVR) is located on Sea Island in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, about 15 kilometres from downtown Vancouver. , was designed to balance security with ease of travel. The deployment of iA-thenticate as part of the CANPASS CANPASS Canadian Pass (document allowing entry into Canada at remote locales)  program reflects Canada's consideration of document authentication as an integral aspect of a comprehensive security plan.

The Imaging Automation platform will be rolled-out as part of the expanded CANPASS program in 2003-2004. The iA-thenticate units provide travel document authentication and validation capabilities to support the CANPASS-Air enrollment process. The technology is an integral step to maintaining the security and integrity of the CANPASS-Air registration process. When applicants attend the interview to complete their enrollment, Imaging Automation's technology is used to ensure that passports and other travel documents presented are genuine.

Later this year, CANPASS-Air Kiosks will open at the following airports: Dorval International Airport, Montreal, MacDonald-Cartier International Airport, Ottawa, Lester B. Pearson International Airport, Toronto, Calgary International Airport Calgary International Airport, (IATA: YYC, ICAO: CYYC), is the main airport that serves Calgary, Alberta, Canada and the surrounding region; It is located 17 km from the downtown core. It is one of Canada's busiest airports by passenger traffic, serving 11. , Edmonton International Airport Edmonton International Airport (IATA: YEG, ICAO: CYEG) is the primary air passenger and air cargo facility in Edmonton, Alberta as well as a major hub facility for Northern Alberta and Northern Canada. , Halifax International Airport Halifax Robert L. Stanfield International Airport[5], or Halifax International Airport (IATA: YHZ, ICAO: CYHZ) is an airport in Enfield, Nova Scotia, Canada that serves the Halifax Regional Municipality and central Nova Scotia as well as  and Winnipeg International Airport.

"Canada is making great strides when it comes to effective border security efforts both at their border crossings and in airports," said Bill Thalheimer, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Imaging Automation. "The deployment of the iA-thenticate platform as part of this CANPASS-Air initiative validates the importance of a fully-integrated and comprehensive security program which is sure to help the government maintain effective, yet efficient border control."

The iA-thenticate platform determines whether or not a document is authentic, if it is expired, if it has been tampered with or if the photo or text matches any government watch lists. The iA-thenticate platform performs multiple security checks in seconds and can be easily integrated with other technologies, such as the iris recognition biometrics used in the CANPASS-Air program.

The iA-thenticate platform can be linked to watch-lists and will identify wanted criminals, terrorists and other suspect individuals and will help customs inspectors improve their ability to identify fraudulent documents and move pre-approved travelers through the airport.

In addition to the major Canadian border crossings, the iA-thenticate platform applications are in use at Boston's Logan International Airport For the Logan airport in Billings, Montana, see .
