Interworking depends crucially on standards to define the interfaces between the components.  Function (CDMA IWF) is enabling Canadian carrier TELUS TELUS Telemetric Universal Sensor  Mobility to deliver its i-Web(TM) data services. i-Web is Western Canada's first and only Internet data service that allows digital cellular phone users to access local content and the Internet in real-time. Information is displayed directly on the digital cellular telephone or optionally on a laptop computer A portable computer that has a flat LCD screen and usually weighs less than eight pounds. Often called just a "laptop," it uses batteries for mobile use and AC power for charging the batteries and desktop use. Today's high-end laptops provide all the capabilities of most desktop computers. .

Using a CDMA cellular telephone, the new i-Web Data Services accesses a wireless Internet portal to retrieve relevant local content and provide Internet connectivity. Local content, including data on stocks, directory listings, news, movie listings, sports scores, weather and much more, is formatted for direct display on the wireless phone. Customers can pay bills and trade stocks, too. TELUS's new service also allows users to access e-mail and other corporate resources without the need for a special modem or laptop computer.

"The journey into the wireless Internet of the future has just begun," said Scott McArthur, director of technology development, TELUS Mobility. "Using the 3Com(R) CDMA IWF, the Total Control solution allows our users access to important local information. They can find the address of the nearest automobile repair shop An automobile repair shop (also known as a garage) is a place where automobiles are repaired by auto mechanics. Some auto parts stores also maintain service operations.

Examples include Pep Boys, Walmart, and Sears Auto Center.
as easily as they can check the latest sports scores or stock quotes. Our cellular network now gives users the same access to data as it does for voice."

Advanced Communications for the 21st Century

TELUS's decision to utilize 3Com Carrier Networks' Total Control 1000 CDMA IWF platform emanated from its strategic need to automatically recognize and route data calls in order to introduce its new i-Web Data Services. With conventional telephone switches unable to transfer cellular data calls to voice networks, data networks and other cellular users, TELUS required a solution with advanced data handling capabilities and compatibility with the existing voice telephone network. To achieve these objectives, the Canadian wireless carrier turned to 3Com Carrier Networks after a thorough evaluation of the marketplace.

"3Com's CDMA IWF put the final pieces together for us to launch our i-Web Data Services," said McArthur. "Driven by the 3Com solution, we now have the technology to route and manage voice and data services for our digital cellular customers. As a result, business users can now capture up-to-date customer information, send and access important e-mail and faxes, make or break their travel plans, etc. For consumers, i-Web is a great way to gain all the benefits of the Internet, plus access local news, weather and entertainment information no matter where they're located. The IWF handles the entire connection."

Powered by 3Com's Total Control 1000 platform CDMA IWF at multiple locations across the country, i-Web Data Services makes a connection from a user's digital cellular phone to a data portal Web server. Customized to provide local content and special services and information for digital cellular telephone displays, the portal formats data, allowing users to view it on the limited display area of the digital cellular phone. Because the data is localized by location, a digital cellular customer can access real-time local news or weather information while traveling from place to place. The CDMA phones can also display portions of Web pages. Harnessing IWF's routing capability, i-Web Data Services also provides connectivity to the Internet or corporate networks when users attach a laptop to their cellular phones.

The Total Control 1000 platform CDMA IWF manages TELUS's end-to-end data solution, allowing the integration of both wireless and wireline data and voice telephony without requiring users to master special skills. The IWF makes the decision about how and where to route the data call from the digital cellular phone and then manages that decision. The 3Com solution has the scalable capacity to service the thousands of new customers TELUS expects to enroll this year.

"With the Total Control platform, data connections are no more complicated than a regular voice telephone call," concluded McArthur. "We're experiencing excellent performance and reliability. Our customers are extremely happy with the simplicity and speed of all the new services now available on most digital cellular phones. We're able to concentrate on serving our customers who clearly are enjoying the reliability of 3Com's CDMA IWF technology."

3Com Carrier Networks and the Wireless Market

Wireless data solutions are an integral part of the CommWorks(R) architecture, 3Com Carrier Networks Business' versatile solution for multiservice packet-based networking. The CommWorks architecture allows service providers to deliver narrowband In communications, transmission rates up to T1 speeds (1.544 Mbps). The upper limit is moving target. At one time, narrowband meant 150 bps (that is 150 bits per second!). Then, the upper limit became 2,400 bps. Later, it moved to 64 Kbps. . Standards-based and designed with open interfaces throughout, the CommWorks architecture meets the telecommunications industry's need for a coherent architecture that allows the deployment of multiple services in a single, unified networking environment. The CommWorks architecture streamlines the migration from today's analog networks to next-generation, packet-based converged networks.

3Com Carrier Networks Business is the world's leading manufacturer of CDMA 2G wireless data equipment, and its CDMA 2G IWF solution is currently compatible with major CDMA switches and is used by virtually every major CDMA cellular and PCS (1) (Personal Communications Services) Refers to wireless services that emerged after the U.S. government auctioned commercial licenses in 1994 and 1995.
