Can win put Tyne back on track?

Byline: NICK PUREWAL

JOHN SHOTTON hopes Tynedale's win at Wharfedale can set their season back on track.

Shrugging off three yellow cards Tynedale stole away 21-15 winners from Yorkshire thanks to tries from Hamish Smales and Joe Graham.

landed one conversion and three penalties as the visitors bettered Mark Bedworth's five penalty goals.

Wharfedale had lock Alistair Allen sent off at the close of the first quarter - but Shotton said his side's own indiscipline all but negated that red card.

Jamie Murray, Kevin Showler and Grant Beasley were all handed yellow cards in a fractious frac·tious

encounter, but Tynedale rugby chairman Shotton was just happy to grab the win.

He said: "We probably should have built a bigger lead in the first half, because we were well on top then.

"They were a man light after the red card on 20-odd minutes, but our three yellow cards meant it was pretty much 14-a-side for much of the match.

"I can't remember a run as bad as that for a long time, so it was vital for us to get the win and hopefully now that can help us turn things around."

Blaydon meanwhile, continued their good run with a fourth straight win, seeing off Blackheath 22-6 at Crow Trees. A Scott Riddell double and an Adam Dehaty try were enough for the hosts, with Andrew Baggett slotting two conversions and a penalty.

Rugby director Tom Rock was delighted with the second half when the scoring dried up as the heavens opened.

Rock said: "We executed our game plan very well in the first half and I was pleased with the lead we had at the break.

"But then the weather turned and it's probably the first time this season we have had to play in really horrible conditions.

"We stuck to the task, though, and they said that was the first time in two years they had not scored from a driving maul, so we can be very pleased with that."
