Can this ridiculous, hideous thing be art? VOICE OF THE NORTH.DURING my long life in the south east of Northumberland, a county which contains some of the most beautiful landscape in the world and some wonderful architecture, I don't think I have ever seen anything so ridiculous and hideous hid·e·ous adj. 1. Repulsive, especially to the sight; revoltingly ugly. See Synonyms at ugly. 2. Offensive to moral sensibilities; despicable. as the pole with shopping trolleys in Newcastle (The Journal, August 10). To read that it is called "a sculpture" is almost unbelievable when it's about the worst of many monstrosities I have seen in the region in the last few years. Do the people who erect these blots on the landscape know what the word "sculpture" means? I doubt it. The dictionary says to sculpt sculpt v. sculpt·ed, sculpt·ing, sculpts v.tr. 1. To sculpture (an object). 2. To shape, mold, or fashion especially with artistry or precision: is to carve out to make or get by cutting, or as if by cutting; to cut out. - Shak. See also: Carve of wood, clay, metal or similar, or to have the gift in the hands to create by such a method. I wonder what gift was employed to create a pole hung with shopping trolleys? And I quote: "Shopping trolleys are everywhere and have become a real symbol of modern society." What an inheritance for my grandchildren! MR BRENNAND, Blyth, Northumberland |
