Can't sleep.

Every time I try to sleep, I can't. I tried tossing and turning, saying the rosary, and reading. Can you help me?

Morgan H., New Jersey

You have already tried some good "get-to-sleep" strategies. You are taking a mature approach in trying to solve the problem.

Try to be careful about what you eat or drink in the few hours before bedtime. For example, a heavy meal or a big snack can make you uncomfortable and prevent you from sleeping. Instead, have a small snack if you need to eat something close to bedtime. Also avoid beverages that have caffeine or a lot of sugar. These can keep you awake. Sometimes a glass of water is the best thirst quencher.

Some people get comfortable in bed and then count objects around them until they drift off to sleep. Or you could count your breaths. For other people, a soothing bath or shower before bedtime helps them get to sleep more easily.

Be sure to talk about this problem with your parents. Since they know you best, they may have some good ideas for you.
