Can't believe I'm 100.

A NURSE who delivered babies during the blackouts in the Second World War has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Mary Boylen enjoyed a party at the Victoria House care home, in Middlesbrough, with staff and fellow residents.

With party balloons tied to her favourite chair, she relaxed and shared memories. She said: "I can't believe I've reached 100, and I feel well for it too."

Mary was born in Grangetown on June 27, 1908 - a time when Teesside was one of the country's industrial powerhouses.

She moved to London for part of her life to train and work as a nurse, but has always been a Boro lass at heart. She said: "I like having the games on the radio, and always listen out for the results."

Mary has lived at the home for 13 years. The day before her birthday, Father Tom O' Neill visited her to administer communion communion: see Eucharist; Lord's Supper. .

Ann Thomas, care assistant team leader, said Mary is a wonderful resident to have at the home.

She said: "We've been looking forward to this for months, and today the card from the Queen arrived."
