Campus to unveil new pounds 5.6m marine skills centre.


GLASGOW College of Nautical Studies Glasgow College of Nautical Studies (GCNS) is a further education college of nautical and maritime studies, and a provider of marine and offshore training courses. Degree courses, in subjects including Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, are offered in association  have been buoyed up by a new pounds 5.6million marine skills centre.

It's the first building to be constructed as part of the New Campus Glasgow project.

The new centre on the banks of the River Clyde is supported with a pounds 5.2million investment from the Scottish Funding Council The Scottish Further and Higher Education Funding Council, more commonly known as the Scottish Funding Council (SFC), is the body in Scotland that distributes funding from the Scottish Government to the country's colleges and universities. .

It will include a modern teaching facility, the refurbishment of existing classrooms to be used as a workshop and a new pontoon with free-fall lifeboat.

The existing marine facility at the college was built as a boat shed in 1968 and is no longer fit for its purpose.

The new facility will be built on the river embankment and, although attached to the land, will appear to float above the water.

It will also double up as conferencing and exhibition space to be used by the other city centre colleges that are part of New Campus Glasgow, along with Glasgow College of Nautical Studies.
