But politics were to be his destiny.

He was elected to represent southern Orange County's 70th District in the state Assembly in 2000 and was re-elected in 2002. In 2004, Campbell won his bid to represent the 35th state Senate district.

Committee. He also was a member of the Senate's Energy, Utilities and Communications; Environmental Quality; and Government Modernization, Efficiency and Accountability committees.

"The Congressman was a vital ally during his years in the California legislature," says Gale Case, chair of CalCPA's Distinguished Service Award Committee. "He has been and remains an important friend of the profession in the halls of government."

During Campbell's tenure as a member of California's Assembly and Senate, he had a significant impact on the practice of public accounting in California. He co-sponsored the 150-hour education bill; helped spearhead efforts to conform California tax law to federal tax reforms; and defended the profession's contributions to the business community in the wake of the Enron scandal, helping to enact rational reforms.

"John Campbell's contributions to the CPA profession are impressive. He was instrumental in getting the licensing requirements for California CPAs modified so that many of our newly licensed CPAs will be able to compete on a national level," says Robert Petersen, former chair of CalCPA's Government Relations Committee. "What's more, while he was in state Capitol, John's integrity and his willingness to speak as a CPA on important issues like California's budget crises increased the visibility and image of the CPA profession."

After Congressman Chris Cox resigned to become chair of the SEC, Campbell ran and won the election to replace him in the 48th Congressional District.

Despite his change of address, CalCPA members can be sure that Campbell will continue to serve as a strong voice for the profession.

Congratulations John!
