Campaign to Safeguard America's Waters (C-SAW).

The Campaign to Safeguard America's Waters (C-SAW) continues to move Alaska's Cruise Ship Ballot Initiative (CSBI) forward. Supporters are gathering the 23,285 signatures required to place the initiative on the November 2004 state ballot. The CSBI would establish the first cruise ship discharge permitting program in the US, and require that cruise ship discharges meet all Alaska Water Quality Standards. The CSBI would also establish taxes to pay for industry impacts on communities, and the cost of placing independent observers on every ship to monitor cruise ship waste control programs. Other provisions would establish taxes for onboard gaming and income while in Alaska waters. For more information, contact C-SAW at (907) 766-3005, or e-mail gershon@aptalaska.net.
