Campaign demands laws to safeguard animals.

Byline: Fatma Salem, Staff Reporter

Dubai: Cases of cruelty against animals do not end and animal lovers are waging a tireless campaign to spare helpless creatures from barbaric treatment. They are now demanding legislation to safeguard animals from such cruel treatment.

Gulf News continuously receives e-mails regarding this matter and people are demanding that they be heard on this matter. This article involves viewpoints from Islam, the public and the government.

Islamic scholar Ahmad Al Kubaisi said humans are the caretakers of the earth.

"Islam's opinion is clear to all, if you treat animals with mercy you will be rewarded and if you treat them with cruelty you will be punished pun·ish

. The way we treat animals can take us to heaven or hell," he said.

He used examples in Islam to support his statement.

"There was a woman who performed prayers five times a day and [observed] Ramadan but she imprisoned im·pris·on

Al Kubaisi added: "There was a reckless reckless adj. in both negligence and criminal cases, careless to the point of being heedless of the consequences ("grossly" negligent). Most commonly this refers to the traffic misdemeanor "reckless driving.  woman, she saw a thirsty thirst·y

The Islamic scholar said Islam has several examples that showed Allah teaching human beings how to treat animals with mercy.

Holly Ann Johns, 21, a British citizen who has lived in Dubai for two years, recently witnessed the cruel treatment of animals. She saw a large number of animals struggling inside a very small enclosure.

"I saw about 85 animals in a total mess. They were restricted in a small enclosure and they were mix of chickens, rams, goats... All were hardly [able to] move because there was no room...

"They truly were in unbelievable mess and the worse thing was that they were drinking each other's urine. I went to see them a couple of days later but they were still the same without care and food. Is that fair?" Holly asked.

Emiratis Mohammad Lootah and his friend Rashid Al Khamis said they could not stand seeing animals being treated mercilessly.

"Islam asked us to treat animals with mercy. They are helpless, they want someone to look after them and feed them regularly," Lootah said.

Enforcing the implementation of laws concerning animal welfare is the Ministry of Environment and Water. It works with various municipalities and the International Agency of Welfare Dubai.
