Camp Outgoes inside.Goth girls, overweight former drug addicts, and Elvis fans are not the kinds of people one would associate with a Bible camp. But that's exactly the crowd that populates Camp Out, a new documentary about a camp for gay Christian youths. The film, produced and directed by the out filmmaking film·mak·ing n. The making of movies. team of Larry Grimaldi and Kirk Marcolina, attempts to answer the question of whether young gay Christians can ever reconcile their faith with their identity. That's a question the filmmakers had a very personal stake in. "Growing up, it was a lot harder for us to come out because we both had very strong Catholic upbringings," says Grimaldi. "It's really scary to feel God is not there for you because you're gay." Though these issues are explored in the film, the result is actually a set of wonderfully funny, uplifting, and campy coming-of-age stories rather than a serious religious diatribe di·a·tribe n. The film documents the experience of 10 teens, including Thomas, a magnetic 18-year-old who chants to Jesus twice a day; Christine, 16, a devout de·vout adj. de·vout·er, de·vout·est 1. "[All of the kids] are being the people God intended them to be instead of what others think they should be," says Grimaldi. "And they accept and respect that."
