The Tory leader confessed: "When I was 14, 15, 16, I was doing things that teenagers do in terms of drinking too much, being caught having the odd fag, things like that."

Mr Cameron also spoke about the "immense void" left by the death of his severely disabled son Ivan earlier this year.

He said in an interview with Grazia magazine: "So much of our life was arranged around Ivan. But also, you are suddenly able to do things you couldn't do before, like walk across a muddy field perhaps, and you find yourself there quickly and it's like, 'Oh, here we are' followed by a feeling of guilt."

Mr Cameron praised his wife Samantha, a designer for luxury stationers Smythson, for keeping him in touch with real life.

He said: "She'd much rather sit at home watching The Wire with a plate of pasta While the only basic difference between these names is the shape of the pasta, each pasta is typically matched with a particular sauce based on cooking time, consistency, ability to hold sauce, ease of eating, etc.  than be at some exciting, flesh-pressing opportunity."
