Cameras to curb speeding drivers; CAMPAIGN: Motorists going too fast are caught in crackdown.

Byline: By Leda Reynolds

DRIVERS are being warned to put the brakes on their speed or face the consequences.

Three new mobile speed cameras are being used across the borough to catch drivers flouting the law.

Solihull Council bought the Pro-laser speed guns, which cost pounds 10,000 each, with cash set aside from Solihull's share of the West Midlands West Midlands, former metropolitan county, central England. Created in the 1974 local government reorganization, the county embraced the Birmingham conurbation and comprised seven metropolitan districts: Walsall, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Sandwell, Birmingham, Solihull,  Road Safety Grant.

And while new figures show that the speed guns are netting drivers who ignore the speed limits, there are fewer speeding motorists than the council anticipated.

A total of 1,385 drivers were targeted with the cameras and of those 21 were given warnings, 72 issued with a fixed penalty notice Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) were introduced in Great Britain in the 1950s to deal with minor parking offences. Originally used by police and traffic wardens, their use has extended to other public officials and authorities, as has the range of offences for which they can be used.  and three have been issued with a court summons.

The crackdowns have taken place in a number of roads with a 30mph limit including Bradford Road, Yardley Wood Road and Broad Oaks Road in Solihull, Green Lane, Delrene Road and Peterbrook Road in Shirley and Station Road in Dorridge.
