The high-rise platforms are used to capture aerial shots and long views of play at the cricket ground. But at around 2.30 yesterday afternoon, the machinery broke down, leaving the cameraman stranded in mid-air and in need of rescue by Durham fire service.

Firefighters used their own aerial ladder to pull up next to the cherry-picker platform.

They then lifted the trapped cameraman to safety - much to the amusement of the large crowd of cricket fans.

Sky even aired footage of the cameraman being brought back down to earth during their coverage.

Last night, the doomed cherry-picker was still stuck at the top of its reach.

But luckily the drama of the mid-air rescue did not interrupt play in the match, which England eventually won by four wickets. Australia were bowled out for a lowly 176, though England still made hard work of reaching the target, losing a rash of wickets.

The win was a relief for England, who faced a series whitewash whitewash, white fluid commonly used as an inexpensive, impermanent coating for walls, fences, stables, and other exterior structures.
