in Treatment of Individuals at Risk of Sudden Cardiac Death Sudden Cardiac Death Definition

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is an unexpected death due to heart problems, which occurs within one hour from the start of any cardiac-related symptoms. SCD is sometimes called cardiac arrest.

Cambridge Heart, Inc. (NASDAQ-CAMH) today announced that David A. Chazanovitz, President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  spoke on the relevance of Microvolt T-Wave Alternans (MTWA MTWA Microvolt T-Wave Alternans

The symposium, held in Boston, MA on August 5, 2002, was designed to consolidate scientific technology and investment information as an aid to discriminate among opportunities in the current environment.

Mr. Chazanovitz reviewed the results of multiple clinical studies supporting the effectiveness of the MTWA Test in patient populations with varying types of cardiac disease, including MADIT MADIT Cardiology A clinical trial–Multicenter Automatic Defibrillator Implantation Trial that evaluated the effects of implanted defibrillators–IDs in Pts with CAD at high risk of ventricular arrhythmia  II type patients, post myocardial infarction myocardial infarction: see under infarction.  patients, heart failure patients, and syncope syncope

 patients at the meeting.

During his presentation Mr. Chazanovitz stated that, "Microvolt T-Wave Alternans allows the practicing cardiologist to find more of the right patients that could benefit from Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator defibrillator, device that delivers an electrical shock to the heart in order to stop certain forms of rapid heart rhythm disturbances (arrhythmias). The shock changes a fibrillation to an organized rhythm or changes a very rapid and ineffective cardiac rhythm to a  (ICD ICD International Classification of Diseases (of the World Health Organization); intrauterine contraceptive device.

) therapy, while also successfully establishing which patients are at minimal risk of suffering a Sudden Cardiac Arrest."

Mr. Chazanovitz went on to say, "Clinical use of MTWA in various cardiology practices demonstrates that approximately 1 in 5 MTWA Tests performed in patient populations often not referred to invasive electrophysiology study, leads to the placement of an ICD. MTWA enables the use of this potentially life saving therapy in individuals at risk, many of whom often go undetected."

Sudden Cardiac Death strikes approximately 400,000 individuals in the US every year. The Microvolt T-Wave Alternans Test was developed to identify these individuals before it is too late.

About the Cambridge Heart Microvolt T-Wave Alternans Test

The Cambridge Heart Microvolt T-Wave Alternans Test measures extremely subtle beat-to-beat fluctuations in a person's heartbeat called T-wave alternans. These tiny heartbeat variations - measured at one millionth of a volt - are detected in any clinical setting where titration titration (tītrā`shən), gradual addition of an acidic solution to a basic solution or vice versa (see acids and bases); titrations are used to determine the concentration of acids or bases in solution.  of the heartrate is possible. The preparation for the test consists of placing proprietary sensors on a patient's chest. Extensive clinical research has shown that patients with symptoms of or at risk of life threatening arrhythmias who test positive for T-wave alternans are at significant risk for subsequent sudden cardiac events including sudden death.

About Cambridge Heart

Cambridge Heart is engaged in the research, development and commercialization of products for the non-invasive diagnosis of cardiac disease. Using innovative technologies, the company is addressing such key problems in cardiac diagnosis as the identification of those at risk of sudden cardiac arrest. The Company's products incorporate its proprietary technology, Microvolt T-Wave Alternans, and are the only diagnostic tools cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to non-invasively measure microvolt levels of T-wave alternans. The Company, founded in 1992, is based in Bedford, Massachusetts and is traded on the NASDAQ/NMS under the symbol CAMH CAMH Centre for Addiction and Mental Health
