Cambodian documentary wins Grand Prize at Yamagata festival.


YAMAGATA, Japan, Oct. 9 Kyodo

A documentary film about people's lives and recovery efforts after the Khmer Rouge Khmer Rouge (kəmĕr` rzh), name given to native Cambodian Communists. Khmer Rouge soldiers, aided by North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops, began a large-scale insurgency against  regime in Cambodia won the Grand Prize on Tuesday at an international film festival in Yamagata Prefecture, northeastern Japan.

 Souls,'' a 1999 film by Cambodian director Rithy Panh, was awarded the prize at the seven-day Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival 2001, which ended Tuesday.

 Cambodia was chosen among 670 entries from 70 countries. The director, however, did not receive the award personally due to an illness.

His proxy read out a statement by Panh at the award ceremony, in which the director expressed hope that people all over the world will see his documentary and use it to help solve conflicts.

''In Vanda's Room'' by Portuguese director Pedro Costa won the Prize of Excellence, presented by the mayor of Yamagata. It focused on an immigrant district in Lisbon.

''A2,'' by Japanese director Tatsuya Mori, examines human relationships and the AUM Shinrikyo AUM Shinrikyo
