Cambior Inc. is proud to announce that its subsidiary, Cambior USA Inc., received the prestigious Health of the Land Award from the US Bureau of Land Management yesterday for the environmental protection and reclamation work done at the site of the Valdez Creek placer in Alaska. The Health of the Land Award is a national award that recognizes individuals and groups who have made use of federally-managed lands in the US and done an exemplary job in restoring them to their natural state. Cambior is one of the few organizations in the mining industry and the only Canadian company to receive the award. The Valdez Creek placer was an alluvial gold deposit located 250 km (160 miles) northeast of Anchorage that Cambior Alaska Inc. operated from 1987 to 1995. During that eight year period, the mine produced 386,000 ounces of gold. It was closed in 1995 and, after reclamation work was completed, Cambior Alaska received the Governor's Award for Reclamation. That award, like the Health of the Land Award presented to Cambior USA yesterday, was given in recognition of the outstanding quality of the reclamation work done at the former mine site. Cambior has been specifically praised for its "careful attention to minimizing the potential for future erosional degradation, while providing an excellent growth medium for rapid recolonization Re`col`o`ni`za´tion n. 1. A second or renewed colonization. by local plant species". Cambior has spent more than US$2 million reclaiming the 600-acre site by infilling, landscaping and reseeding the waste dump, by flooding the open pit mine to create a lake more than one kilometre long and by recontouring the creekbed to follow its original course. The new configuration blends well with the surrounding valley. The site has become a habitat for fish and wildlife and has campground and public use potential.
