Cambex Introduces the Centurion 2000 SA - The Alternative Solution in SSA Storage.

WALTHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 3, 1998--

The Centurion 2000 SA Disk Array Provides High Speed SSA (Serial Storage Architecture) A fault tolerant peripheral interface from IBM that transfers data at 80 and 160 Mbytes/sec. SSA uses SCSI commands, allowing existing software to drive SSA peripherals, which are typically disk drives.  Storage

Cambex Corporation announced today the immediate availability of the Centurion 2000 SA, the latest addition to the Centurion 2000 family of high performance open systems storage arrays. The Centurion 2000 SA provides an alternative to IBM for SSA (Serial Storage Architecture Serial Storage Architecture - (SSA) IBM's proposed ANSI standard for a standard high-speed interface to disk clusters and arrays. SSA allows full-duplex packet multiplexed serial data transfers at rates of 20Mb/sec in each direction. ) storage from a leading provider of high availability Also called "RAS" (reliability, availability, serviceability) or "fault resilient," it refers to a multiprocessing system that can quickly recover from a failure. There may be a minute or two of downtime while one system switches over to another, but processing will continue.  storage solutions.

The Centurion 2000 SA is fully compatible with the popular IBM 7133 while providing unique availability features and investment protection through its support of 10,000 RPM SSA drives and the emerging SSA40 (160 MB/sec) standard. The Centurion 2000 SA also establishes breakthrough pricing for SSA storage bringing the user price of SSA storage under $0.25 per Megabyte One million bytes, or more precisely 1,048,576 bytes. Also MB, Mbyte and M-byte. See mega and space/time.

(unit) megabyte - (MB, colloquially "meg") 2^20 = 1,048,576 bytes = 1024 kilobytes. 1024 megabytes are one gigabyte.
 in large configurations.

The Centurion 2000 SA supports all the availability features of SSA including full access to all stored data in the event of a single cable or drive failure as well as automatic reconfiguration of a disk drive when a disk is added to the SSA loop. Redundant power and cooling and hot-swappable disk drives, power and cooling modules are standard. Each Centurion 2000 SA enclosure includes a unique Service Processor and Operator Panel which actively monitors all environmental conditions and provides audible, visual and in-band alerts in the event of any subsystem component failure. For RS/6000 users, the Centurion 2000 SA is compatible with IBM's StorX storage manager which provides an intuitive graphical user interface graphical user interface (GUI)

Computer display format that allows the user to select commands, call up files, start programs, and do other routine tasks by using a mouse to point to pictorial symbols (icons) or lists of menu choices on the screen as opposed to having to

SSA storage is supported on a wide range of open systems platforms including all models of the IBM RS/6000 and SP2, and many SUN, HP, and PC servers. Using industry standard SSA RAID adapters with on-board On board usually means to be traveling on some vehicle. For example, Baby On Board. Compare with overboard.

Metaphorically, the term on-board is often used to refer to some piece of technology that is integrated in a moving vehicle, for example:
read and write cache, the Centurion 2000 SA can be configured for ultra high-performance and availability with "floating" hot spares, automatic drive reconstruction, and RAID 0, 1, 3, or 5 data protection.

The Centurion 2000 SA is highly modular and scalable with storage capacities ranging up to 216 GB in a single subsytem and up to 1.9 TB in a single 72" rack. It provides total SSA compatibility including the ability to co-reside in the same SSA "loop" and in the same physical rack as existing IBM SSA storage. Designed to provide maximum investment protection, the Centurion 2000 SA supports the latest generation of 10,000 rpm 9 and 18 GB SSA disk drives as well as the double-bandwidth SSA40 standard.

"We view the Centurion 2000 SA as an excellent choice for customers seeking the performance, availability, and configuration benefits of the SSA architecture. With this product introduction, Cambex is now able to offer RS/6000 users the most complete line of disk storage arrays in the industry including the option of SSA, Fibre Channel, or SCSI SCSI

Once common standard for connecting peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, etc.) to small and medium-sized computers. SCSI has given way to faster standards, such as Firewire and USB.
host connectivity," stated Arnie Epstein, Vice President and Product Manager for SSA storage at Cambex.

The Centurion 2000 SA joins the Centurion 2000 family of high performance, high availability storage solutions that include the recently announced Centurion 2000 FM and FJ Fibre Channel storage arrays. Available immediately from Cambex and its authorized resellers, list prices range from $19,450 for 55 Gigabytes to $497,200 for 1.96 Terabytes of storage. Support plans include 7x24 on-site service as well as customer maintenance options.
