Calzaghe bout gets new date

Joe Calzaghe's light-heavyweight bout with Roy Jones Jr has been re-scheduled for Saturday November 8 at Madison Square Garden. The fight was originally due to take place on September 20, but was postponed when the Welshman sprained his wrist in training. A new date has now been set for the contest, which will see Calzaghe put his unbeaten record on the line.

The 36-year-old relinquished his super-middleweight crown when he beat Bernard Hopkins in April to become the WBC light-heavyweight champion, and he has insisted that the clash with Jones will be his last competitive fight. The bout will now go ahead less than two months later than originally scheduled, and will be shown on American pay-TV network HBO and on Setanta in the UK."I can't wait to get back to America and triumph over another boxing legend," Calzaghe said of the much-awaited contest.

Jones, the former pound-for-pound champion who has been in decline since his shock defeat by Antonio Tarver in 2004, had a more colourful take on the new date. "I'm just glad to be blessed with the opportunity to be God's instrument that he plays his beautiful music through, and I just can't wait for November 8," he said.
