Calvert Social Index Pending Actions.Business Editors BETHESDA, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 28, 2003 The Calvert Social Research Department has submitted the following recommendations regarding actions within the Calvert Social Index The Calvert Social Index is a stock market index created by the Calvert Group as a benchmark of large companies that are considered socially responsible or ethical. It currently consists of 468 companies, weighted by market capitalization, selected from approximately 1,000 of the (TM). If approved, the following recommendations will be effective when the Calvert Social Index Committee convenes its quarterly meeting in June 2003. ADDITIONS: None DELETIONS: Patterson-UTI Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ NASDAQ in full National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations U.S. market for over-the-counter securities. Established in 1971 by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), NASDAQ is an automated quotation system that reports on :PTEN PTEN Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase PTEN Phosphatase and Tensin Homolog PTEN Prime Time Entertainment Network (television network) ) is recommended for deletion from the Calvert Social Index because it does not meet Calvert's criteria for workplace safety. If approved, this deletion will take place in June 2003. OTHER: Calpine Corporation (NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange :CPN) is recommended for continued inclusion in the Calvert Social Index. On April 16, 2003, Calvert Social Research Department (CSRD CSRD Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration CSRD Comox Strathcona Regional District CSRD Centre for Sustainable Rural Development CSRD Communications-Computer Systems Requirements Document (USAF) ) recommended that Calpine Corporation be deleted from the Index because it did not meet Calvert's criteria for the indigenous peoples' rights screen. As a result of subsequent dialogue with the company, however, CSRD believes that the company meets all of Calvert's criteria for investment. If approved in June, the company will remain in the Index. Calvert Social Index Construction The Calvert Social Index is created by taking the 1,000 largest companies in the U.S., representing stocks listed on the NYSE and NASDAQ-AMEX (not including closed-end mutual funds, ADRs, REITS REITS Real Estate Investors of the Tri-States (Harrison, TN) , and non-common shares) and ranks them in descending order based on their market capitalization. Calvert's Social Research Department analyzes each company in the base of 1,000 companies.
