Caltrans Earns More Environmental Top Honors.


SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The California Department of Transportation The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is a government agency in the U.S. state of California. Its mission is to improve mobility across the state. It manages the state highway system and is actively involved with public transportation systems in California.  (Caltrans) has received a 2008 Tranny Award for Environmental Enhancement in the field of stormwater quality management. The California Transportation Foundation presented this award to the Caltrans Stormwater Management Program at the 19th Annual Tranny Awards Ceremony earlier this month.

"This award is affirmation that we are headed in the right direction when it comes to preserving and enhancing California's resources and assets."

The Caltrans Stormwater Management Program is one of the most comprehensive and advanced programs in the nation. In presenting the award, The California Transportation Foundation cited the Caltrans Stormwater Management Program's innovative integrated stormwater management approach on treating stormwater run-off, its collaborative efforts and partnerships with other agencies on watershed protection The term watershed refers to an area of land that drains precipitation that falls on it to a common point. These points could be streams, lakes, etc. Precipitatoin falling on any part of a watershed can travel quickly on the surface of the land, known as surface runoff, or travel through , the development of new Best Management Practices, and its public outreach and education.

The Tranny Award comes on the heels of a very successful year for Caltrans' Stormwater Program, which recently received national recognition with receipt of the 2007 National Clean Water Act Recognition Award from the United States Environmental Protection Agency "EPA" redirects here.
