Donna Carlson of the Rubber Pavements Association, Caltrans has several huge projects planned. Since Gray Davis became governor, California's commitment to asphalt rubber has increased significantly. Carlson worries that the six California processors that make the crumb rubber for hot mix will be unable to keep up with the surge in demand from projects undertaken by Caltrans and local governments. Rubber Technology International Inc. is one of the six crumb rubber processors in California.

"We are meeting the needs of Caltrans in their efforts to make use of recycled tires as they increase the number of highways that are made of, or repaired using, rubberized asphalt. Among the other benefits of crumb rubber in the asphalt is that the highways are longer lasting and quieter," stated Webb.
