Calpis Announces New Findings of Lactobacillus Acidophilus Strain L-92.


Tokyo, Japan, Nov 11, 2005 - (JCNN JCNN Japan Corporate News Network ) - Calpis has announced that its Functional Food and Drink Development Laboratory has obtained new findings of lactobacillus acidophilus Lactobacillus acidophilus
A bacteria found in yogurt that changes the balance of the bacteria in the intestine in a beneficial way.

 property. Specifically, the Laboratory has confirmed that L-92 can induce interleukin 12 (IL-12) and inhibit the excessive activity of Th2 immune cells.

Further, L-92 has a property to induce the apoptosis of excessive Th2 immune cells. Th2 is a kind of immune cell involved in allergy. Allergy is developed when the balance between Th1 and Th2 is disrupted.

Details of these findings were presented at the 1st General Meeting of the Japanese Association for Food Immunology on November 9 and 10. Going forward, Calpis will proceed with research on L-92 regarding applicability to various allergic symptoms including atopic dermatitis.
