Calpine, along with development partner and turn-key contractor Bechtel Enterprises Holdings, Incorporated (San Francisco, CA) plans to proceed with construction immediately on a $300 million 600 mega-watt (MW) natural-gas fired combined-cycle power plant that will be the largest of its kind in the Silicon Valley. The Coyote Valley plant, utilizing two Westinghouse model 501F combustion turbines and a steam turbine generator, is scheduled to begin delivering power to the grid as early as summer of 2003.

Monday's 5-0 vote ended a two year debate period between a South San Jose neighborhood and Calpine, the nation's fastest growing independent power company. Ken Abreu, General Manager of the Calpine/Bechtel Joint Venture stated, "We are extremely proud of the tremendous support we have received from such a wide variety of organizations, community leaders and the citizens of San Jose. We have always believed this is an ideal location for a plant, in a region without its own local source of significant power generation."

Calpine is focused on clean, efficient, natural gas-fired generation and is the world's largest producer of renewable geothermal energy. They have launched the largest power development program in North America. To date, the company has approximately 34,900MW of base load capacity and 7,600MW of peaking capacity in operation, under construction, and in announced development in 29 states, the United Kingdom and Canada.

Bechtel Enterprises is the development, financing and ownership affiliate of the Bechtel organization, a global engineering and construction firm. They have been at the center of energy development since the 1940's, having built more than 450 power stations with a total generating capacity exceeding 250,000MW.
