), today announced the San Jose-based power company will begin construction of Texas' first merchant power plant.

The Pasadena Power Plant, a 240 megawatt, natural gas-fired facility, will be built on the Houston Ship Channel The Houston Ship Channel in Houston, Texas is part of the Port of Houston—one of the United States's busiest sea ports. The channel is a conduit between the continental interior and the Gulf of Mexico for both petrochemical products and Midwestern grain.  in Pasadena, Texas.

The $150 million power plant will provide 90 mw of electricity, and 200,000 lbs of steam (equivalent to approximately 20 mw of electricity) to the Phillips Petroleum Houston Chemical Complex, the remaining capacity will be sold in the Texas market. This state-of-the-art power plant will be 30% more efficient than competing gas-fired power plants in the state.

To commemorate the start of construction, Calpine will host a groundbreaking ceremony at the plant site on Feb. 27 at 11 a.m. The plant site is located at 955 Phillips Road, adjacent to the Phillips Houston Chemical Complex in Pasadena.

As the U.S. electric power industry becomes deregulated, merchant plants, such as the Pasadena facility, will represent the next generation of power production. Unlike traditional independent power projects, which sell electricity to utilities under long-term contracts, a "merchant plant" is designed to produce low-cost electricity for sale to customers under a variety of short, mid and long-term contracts.
