Calpine Announces Senior Management Promotions for Bay Area Power Program.

), one of the nation's fastest growing independent power companies, today announced the promotions of Robert T. Hepple and Curtis A. Hildebrand to vice presidents of project development.

In July 1998, Calpine entered into a joint venture with Bechtel Enterprises Holdings, Inc. of San Francisco to develop four power plants totaling 2,000 megawatts of electricity. These units will help meet the growing demand for power in the San Francisco Bay Area “Bay Area” redirects here. For other uses, see Bay Area (disambiguation).

Two of the four projects in the Bay Area Power Program have been announced: the Delta Energy Center in Pittsburg, Calif. and the Metcalf Energy Center The Metcalf Energy Center is a 600 megawatt combined cycle power plant located in South San Jose, California in an area known as Coyote Valley. The power plant is owned by Calpine and powered by natural gas.  in San Jose.

Hepple will continue to manage the Calpine/Bechtel Bay Area Power Program, which will consist of four modern natural gas-fired combined-cycle energy centers to be built in separate locations in the Bay Area. Hepple has successfully led the joint venture team through the discovery phases of this effort.

Hildebrand will manage the development of the Bay Area Power Program's Metcalf Energy Center, a 600-megawatt facility. The application for certification of the Metcalf facility is now before the California Energy Commission The California Energy Commission is California’s primary energy policy and planning agency. Created in 1974 and headquartered in Sacramento, the Commission has responsibility for activities that include forecasting future energy needs, promoting energy efficiency through  (CEC (Central Electronic Complex) The set of hardware that defines a mainframe, which includes the CPU(s), memory, channels, controllers and power supplies included in the box. Some CECs, such as IBM's Multiprise 2000 and 3000, include data storage devices as well. ) and the city of San Jose for review. The CEC and the city will examine the project's feasibility based upon a comprehensive environmental and technical audit and public review.

Hildebrand was responsible for leading the successful development of the Sutter Power Plant for Calpine, California's first power plant licensed under industry deregulation Deregulation

Traditional areas that have been deregulated are the telephone and airline industries.
. The 545-megawatt plant, located near Yuba City, Calif., is expected to begin generating electricity in June 2001.
