SANTA BARBARA Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850. , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 15, 1999--

No More Busy Signals

CallWave announced today that 100,000 people have downloaded and registered for the free Internet Answering Machine service in just a little over one month following the initial launch on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999.

CallWave's FREE Internet Answering Machine (IAM IAM - Interactive Algebraic Manipulation. Interactive symbolic mathematics for PDP-10.

) enables net users with only a single phone line to hear who's calling them while they're online. The Internet Answering Machine allows Internet users Internet user ninternauta m/f

to feel comfortable leaving their single line Internet connection up and running, without having to worry about missing important phone calls.

IAM also eliminates annoying busy signals for callers trying to reach someone who is online. Instead of getting a busy signal, the caller Caller may refer to one of the following:
  • Caller (telecommunications), a party that originates a call
  • Caller (dancing), a person that calls dance figures in round dances and square dances
  • Caller to Islam, the Islamic equivalent of a Christian missionary
can leave a voice message that the online user hears instantly over the speakers on their computer. The Internet Answering Machine occupies a small window on the user's computer screen while they are online and displays incoming calls, plays messages instantly and saves them for replaying later.

"The experience of getting a call from an important friend or family member over the Internet Answering Machine is like magic to our users," said David Hofstatter, president of CallWave. "We find that our best sales people are the users themselves. They install it, use it a few times, and then send the small, compact program to others. Internet Answering Machine is a killer app A software application that is exceptionally useful or exciting. Killer apps are innovative and often represent the first of a new breed, and they are extremely successful. For example, in the late 1970s, the VisiCalc spreadsheet was the killer app for the Apple II, providing reason  for 40 million home and small business net users across the U.S. and Canada."

"I have no computer training whatsoever, and I didn't want to have a second phone line installed," said Glenda Trammel, a new IAM user. "But, I really need a way for my family to reach me while I'm on-line. Since my parents are elderly, I worried about emergencies. CallWave has completely taken away any worries I had. "Internet Answering machine is providing a service that is desperately needed," said Bruce Thompson, CallWave's director of marketing. Since launch, we have completed over 1,000,000 calls that, without IAM, would have been missed. Instead of getting a busy signal, a million callers have used our service to reach someone who was online. In a short time, we've made a big impact."
