MICHAEL SMITH netted a last-gasp winner as Edinburgh University beat league leaders Lothian Thistle 3-2. The 18-year-old striker was only called into the first team after an injury crisis saw 10 of Dougie Samuel's players sidelined.

But Smith rattled in the killer blow with almost the last kick.

Thistle had clawed their way back into the game through David Oswald and James Craig to draw 2-2 going into injury time.

Boss Samuel said: "I've had guys dropping all over the place and we had a few young boys come in. I'm delighted with the win."

Spartans edged past Edinburgh City 2-0 at Meadowbank to take over from Thistle at the top.

Preston Athletic brought a fourgame losing streak to an end with a 5-0 gubbing of Coldstream.

Stirling University went third with a 5-2 win over Eyemouth United, Gala Fairydean's won 2-0 at Easthouses Lily, Gretna crushed Peebles 6-1 and Leith Athletic beat Ormiston 4-1.
