Call for Participants: Type II Diabetes Research Subjects Needed; Northern Illinois University Recruits Volunteers to Complete Study.

DEKALB, Ill. -- Northern Illinois research fellow Theresa M. Schultz, R.D., L.D.N., announced today a call for research subjects in her current type II diabetes study. In the study, Ms. Schultz will examine the effects of R-alpha lipoic acid on HbA1c, lipid levels, and blood pressure in type 2 diabetics.

R-alpha lipoic acid, used in conjunction with biotin, is believed to have an active role in balancing insulin production with glucose uptake. Imbalances, often severe, are a result of adult-onset or type II diabetes.

"Lipoic supplements have been studied and prescribed in Europe for over 20 years, but little has been done in the United States," said Ms. Schultz. "In our study we hope to recruit people actively suffering from type II diabetes and monitor their A1C, cholesterol, and blood pressure, to a carefully balancing supplement."

Subject Criteria

Volunteers for the study must be type II diabetics age 21 to 65 years of age, non-smokers in otherwise good health.
