 Secretary of Agriculture Johanns to Receive Briefing on Crop Damage During California Visit to Unveil Details of 2007 Farm Bill Proposal

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- California's agricultural industry stands to lose more than $1 billion this year due to unusually low temperatures that have crippled many of the state's commodities, including citrus, avocados, strawberries, leafy greens, cabbage, celery and onions. "California Grown" (www.californiagrown.org) is a statewide campaign designed to educate consumers about the importance of buying locally grown agricultural products wherever they shop.

To assist with the losses, several efforts from the California state administration are underway. Earlier this month, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger proclaimed a state of emergency for all counties, due to the extreme cold weather, and a number of social services programs have been created to support workers affected by the crop disaster.
