This celebration is a unique opportunity to acknowledge the Swedish scientist and industrialist Alfred Nobel and his visions for peace and scholarship, the many outstanding Nobel laureates associated with California research institutions, and the important role of science in society. The beneficiary of this celebration, the COSMOS program at the University of California, will allow young people to pursue their interest for the sciences. The goal of this program mirrors Alfred Nobel's thinking. 100 years ago he created the first truly international Prize as a reward for scientific breakthroughs, but also as an inspiration to new generations of scientists.

California and Sweden share a perspective on science and its importance to the future of mankind. Scientific breakthroughs have been the base for important new industries both in California and in Sweden. California and Sweden have assumed leading roles in biotechnology and information technology, including wireless. Through this Swedish-Californian celebration, we wish to strengthen the contacts between our institutions of higher learning, our businesses, and ultimately, between our societies.
