Through Nov. 6, IINC IINC Insurance Information Network of California  has confirmed 7,260 claims of all types stemming from the fires, IINC Executive Director Candysse Miller said. "It's mostly homeowners, though it's a very eclectic mix of properties, from some very high-end homes to smaller vacation cabins to what we'd think of as more traditional homes," Miller said. "There are some mini-malls and some mom-and-pop type businesses that have been affected, but in general, it's probably safe to say the commercial exposure will be fairly small."

While cautioning that not enough information had been gathered about either damages or insured exposure to construct an accurate projection, Miller said her organization, along with both Insurance Services Office Insurance Services Office, Inc. (ISO) is a provider of data, underwriting, risk management and legal/regulatory services to property-casualty insurers and other clients. Headquartered in Jersey City, New Jersey, the organization serves clients with offices throughout the United  Inc. and the Insurance Information Institute, was looking at $2 billion as a "ceiling" for the total exposure. If reached, it would make these fires the most destructive in U.S. history, surpassing the 1991 Oakland Hills Oakland Hills is a common informal name for that section of the Berkeley Hills which extends along the eastern side of Oakland, California. In recent decades, it has become the more common popular term although it remains "officially" incorrect among geographers and gazetteers.  fires that destroyed 2,900 homes with an insured cost of $1.7 billion.
