California creates new businesses at its fastest rate of the 1990s.

, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 2, 1996--California is creating new businesses at its fastest rate of the 1990s, a public records information service reported.

A total of 22,107 newly incorporated businesses were formally registered with the Secretary of State during the first five months of this year (see chart). That was up 5.8 percent from 20,901 for the same period last year, according to according to

The low of the decade was reached in 1991 with 18,129 business filings. None of the January-to-May totals exceeded 20,000 until last year.

"There are several different factors that lead to growth in new businesses. At this point in the business cycle California's growing economy is clearly the reason for the increase," said Rick Rozar, CDB president.

The current growth in business filings varies widely from county to county. By region, business growth was strongest in the Central Valley and slowest along the Central Coast.
