California considers taxing private club memberships. (Government Watch).


California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W). , in an effort to eliminate a projected state deficit of $34 billion over the next 18 months, is looking at numerous tax changes. One of those changes would be expanding the sales and use tax Sales and use tax refers to:
  • Sales tax
  • Use tax
 to business activities, personal services personal services n. in contract law, the talents of a person which are unusual, special or unique and cannot be performed exactly the same by another. These can include the talents of an artist, an actor, a writer, or professional services. , or entertainment such as admission fees, private club memberships, or cable television. This has not been officially introduced in a bill, but it is something Governor Gray Davis (D) is seriously considering, and it could be introduced at any time.
