Since 1994, the California Venture Forum has created a venue for start-up and emerging companies to meet potential investors, with the last eight investor forums enabling companies to raise more than $20 million in investment money and more than half of all companies acquiring funding since its inception.

The 15 winners reflect the diversity of Southern California's entrepreneurial sector, spanning an array of fields and technologies. Of the firms that submitted selected business plans, six are based in Orange County, four in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County, three from San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. e-commerce company targeting the occupational medicine sector

of the healthcare industry.

-- Indiespace.com, Santa Monica, Calif., is an application

service provider offering web hosting, e-commerce, virtual

desktop applications and artist career management solutions to

the independent entertainment market.

-- Mdprose.com, Altadena, Calif., manages the physician's patient

documentation process through its web site and proprietary

information system.

-- Video Symphony, Burbank, Calif., provides corporate training

content in digital media production software and hardware,

primarily serving media production companies in the

entertainment industry.

CVF presenters from San Diego County:

-- AskCredit.com, San Diego, provides Internet-based instant

credit decision-making software for financial institutions.

-- LookupGuide.com, San Diego, offers businesses a full suite of

business-to-business products and services to create and

enhance their online presence.

-- Target Protein Technologies, Inc., San Diego, has developed

enabling biotechnology for tissue-specific targeting of drugs,

genes and contrast agents.

CVF presenter from Ventura County:

-- Electronic Sensor Technology, L.P., Newbury Park, Calif., is

an analytical instrument manufacturer which has developed an

innovative technology for their electronic nose that can test

the chemical composition of vapors, odors and fragrances in

real time.

CVF presenter from Arizona:

-- HotRodCafe.com, Gilbert, Ariz., is an ecommerce distributor of

high-performance parts for the automobile aftermarket.

Keynote Speakers

Keynote speakers will include Nicholas Yocca of the law firm Stradling Yocca Carlson and Rauth, who will discuss the latest trends in venture deals, and Ms. Fariba Ghodsian, Ph.D., senior vice president of Roth Capital Partners Roth Capital Partners, LLC, is a full service Investment Banking firm, specializing in the small and micro cap markets. Roth’s focus, according to its official website, "has been, is, and will continue to be providing the full spectrum of investment banking services, , who will discuss opportunities for successful investment in the health care industry. Additional speakers will address the current the state of new economy.

According to Jay Winokur, Forum Event Coordinator, after the first stage business plan review process was completed, those firms who submitted business plans received evaluations of their plans. The evaluations came from a committee consisting of the CVF Board of Directors, business executives and advisors, entrepreneurs, educators and investors from throughout the Southern California business community who identified their strengths and weaknesses and the likelihood they will receive investment funding.

The business plan evaluations included analyses of market potential, economic issues (including ROI (Return On Investment) The monetary benefits derived from having spent money on developing or revising a system. In the IT world, there are more ways to compute ROI than Carter has liver pills (and for those of you who never heard of that expression, it means a lot).  potential), competitive advantages, ability to erect barriers to competitors, strength of the management team and the viability of the investor's exit strategy.

The 15 selected companies then attended a professional training and mentoring program that prepared them for interfacing with the investment community. The all-day presentation workshop helped coach the entrepreneurs through their plans and presentations. After the workshop, each company was furnished with professionally produced audio-visual presentations.
