California Supreme Court to Air Live on KVIE/KVPT Oct. 8.

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 23, 2002

Public television stations KVPT Fresno and KVIE Sacramento announced today that the Supreme Court of the State of California, Court of Appeal Courtroom for the Fifth Appellate Relating to appeals; reviews by superior courts of decisions of inferior courts or administrative agencies and other proceedings.  District in Fresno, will broadcast its oral argument calendar in a first-time live telecast on KVIE-6 and KVPT-18 (and statewide on The California Channel) Tuesday, October 8, 2002 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

"The court is looking forward to holding oral arguments for the first time in Fresno," said Chief Justice Ronald M. George Ronald Marc George (born March 11, 1940) is the current and 27th Chief Justice of California, where he heads the Supreme Court of California. He was appointed to his current position by Governor Pete Wilson in May 1996. He has an B.A. from Princeton University, a J.D. . "We especially welcome participation by teachers and students in California's Central Valley and hope this session will serve as a valuable educational tool concerning our judicial system."

This groundbreaking outreach initiative will allow the public to watch arguments in three major cases before the Court. Central Valley high school students, who prepared for the issues with curriculum packages created for the initiative, will be present to hear the proceedings.

For the first time, the Court will allow students to ask the members of the Court questions during the live broadcast. The question process is designed to allow students to ask questions that interest them and receive a direct response from the Chief Justice and the Associate Justices of the Supreme Court.
