SAN RAMON, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 18, 2000

New Technology Enables Government to Accept Sales

and Use Tax Returns Online

Software AG Inc. has announced that the California State Board of Equalization will implement its Tamino(TM) native XML database See XML database.  to store Sales and Use Tax Sales and use tax refers to:
  • Sales tax
  • Use tax
returns filed online from business owners.

Tamino's ability to store XML XML
 in full Extensible Markup Language.

Markup language developed to be a simplified and more structural version of SGML. It incorporates features of HTML (e.g., hypertext linking), but is designed to overcome some of HTML's limitations.
documents "natively" eliminates the need for translation that can impair performance, alter data or require additional data entry and administration.

Under the BOE's E-Filing program, businesses can use real-time Internet technology to file their Sales and Use Tax returns and arrange for payment of tax using an Electronic Return Originator. The ERO ERO European Radiocommunications Office
ERO Education Review Office (New Zealand)
ERO Explicit Route Object (protocol)
ERO Eastern Regional Office
ERO Electronic Return Originator
collects data from taxpayers, checks their forms for computational errors and then transmits the returns as XML documents to the BOE which inputs them directly into the Tamino native XML database.

"We are seeing increased momentum in the adoption of XML technology," Alf Goebel, president, Software AG Inc., said. "The California State Board of Equalization's decision to implement the Tamino native XML database validates our belief that government really stands to benefit from XML technology."

The BOE will keep its current, proven mainframe system, Software AG's Adabas(TM) database, and employ a three-tiered approach to handling its data. In this model, the Tamino native XML database is the middle tier, with the ERO on top and a legacy database as the bottom tier.

"The Board of Equalization recognizes that XML is the electronic data interchange See EDI.

format of the future," Larry Hanson, data architect, California State Board of Equalization, said. "XML helps facilitate our move into e-government."

The initial phase of the BOE's E-Filing program was developed to serve more than 700,000 business owners in California; subsequent phases of the E-Filing initiative will include additional taxpayers and programs.

The BOE has been testing Tamino since June 2000 and expects the program to go live by the end of the year.
