The purpose of the present study was to compare the California pass/fail rates of graduates of regionally accredited and those of regionally unaccredited program on both the oral exam for licensure and the written exam, the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP EPPP Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology EPPP Electronic Publications Pilot Project EPPP Electronic Power Plant Program EPPP Emergency Production Planning Program ). California is relatively unique in that graduates of unaccredited schools are eligible for licensure. As pointed out by Safarjan (1998), in California the standards applied by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education vocational education, training designed to advance individuals' general proficiency, especially in relation to their present or future occupations. Safarjan said that graduates of unaccredited schools cannot be licensed in states other than California, and possibly Colorado, and that graduates of unaccredited schools are limited in regard to eligibility for employment, managed care companies, pre and post doctoral internship internship /in·tern·ship/ (in´tern-ship) the position or term of service of an intern in a hospital. internship, n the course work or practicum conducted in a professional dental clinic. programs, the National Register, and ability to obtain full membership in APA (All Points Addressable) Refers to an array (bitmapped screen, matrix, etc.) in which all bits or cells can be individually manipulated. Method The number of written exam (EPPP) passes and failures as a function of type of program graduated from was obtained from the California Board of Psychology for April 1996, April 1997, and October, 1997. The comparable information was obtained for the oral exam in June 1996, June 1997, and January 1998 (The Board does not provide mean scores). The data from institutions outside the United States and Canada was not included in this study. Programs that were not listed as regionally accredited in the directories of the 6 regional accreditation Regional accreditation is a term used in the United States to refer to the process by which one of several accrediting bodies, each serving one of six defined geographic areas of the country, accredits schools, colleges, and universities. associations in the United States were presumed to be not regionally accredited. Results and Discussion On the written (EPPP) exam, 127 (39.0%) of the 326 exams taken by unaccredited program graduates were passed, and 594 (64.6%) of the 920 exams taken by accredited program graduates were passed, [X.sup.2] (1, N = 1246 ) = 63.96, p [is less than] .001. On the oral exam, 104 (38.8%) of the 268 exams taken by unaccredited program graduates were passed, and 574 (47.5%) of the 1474 exams taken by accredited program graduates were passed, [X.sup.2] (1, N = 678 ) = 6.42, p [is less than] .02. A likely explanation for the greater discrepancy on the written than the oral exam is that the talent gap is not large because of the large percentage of unaccredited program graduates who were not eligible to take the oral exam because they failed the written exam. The significantly superior performance of doctoral recipients of accredited programs over doctoral recipients from unaccredited programs is not surprising. The present authors would emphatically not encourage persons from enrolling in unaccredited programs if their GRE (Generic Routing Encapsulation) A tunneling protocol developed by Cisco that allows network layer packets to contain packets from a different protocol. Even if an unaccredited program is the only program accessible to a person considering a career in psychology, we still urge great caution. On the other hand, it is apparent that graduates of unaccredited programs can and do become licensed to practice psychology in the state of California. To categorically classify all unaccredited programs as "diploma mills" may be neither fair nor accurate. References Educational Reporting Service. (1995).
