California Pharmacists Association Names Award Recipients at Annual Meeting.

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 20, 2002

The California Pharmacists Association (CPhA) held its 2002 Annual Meeting awards ceremony at the Marriott in Burlingame, California on Friday, February 8. As part of the Association's Annual Meeting, "Perspective: Becoming An Image Maker," pharmacy professional achievement awards were presented to outstanding members. The awards included 2001's Pharmacist of the Year, Bowl of Hygeia, Distinguished Young Pharmacist, Pharmacy Student of the Year and the Large and Small Local Association of the Year awards.

Pharmacist of the Year

The Pharmacist of the Year is awarded to an individual recognized for outstanding activities in the profession of pharmacy. CPhA awarded its highest honor -- the Pharmacist of the Year Award -- to John Tilley, RPh., FACA FACA Federal Advisory Committee Act

Pharmacist Tilley has been a leader in pharmacy for more than 25 years, serving as a Board of Trustee member and President of CPhA, President of the California Pharmacists -- Political Action Committee, past President of the Southeast Los Angeles Pharmacists Association, member of the American Pharmaceutical Association (APhA) as well as a Governor Davis appointee to the California State Board of Pharmacy among many others. Tilley is also the owner of Zweber Apothecary apothecary /apoth·e·cary/ (ah-poth´e-kar?e) pharmacist.

Bowl of Hygeia

The Bowl of Hygeia serves to recognize a pharmacist for outstanding and continuing activity in the community. The recipient should be a person who has demonstrated how pharmacists can elevate themselves and their profession in the eyes of the public through participation in community civic programs or participation in government activities at the local or state level. The 2001 Bowl of Hygeia Award was presented to Robert Duey, PharmD, of Castro Valley, California Castro Valley is a census-designated place (CDP) in Alameda County, California, United States. As of the 2000 census, it is the fifth most populous unincorporated area in California, and the twenty-third in the United States. . Pharmacist Duey is currently employed by Hayward Pharmacy and has been an active member of the American Pharmaceutical Association, the Alameda County Pharmacists Association and the California Pharmacists Association and sits on the board of the Eden Hospital Foundation. Duey has also served as Chair of the California Pharmacists Insurance Committee and President of the Boys & Girls Club of America in Alameda County.

Distinguished Young Pharmacist

The Distinguished Young Pharmacist was created in 1987 to recognize a pharmacist who has received an entry degree in pharmacy less than ten (10) years ago. The recipient must be a member of CPhA and licensed in California. The person must also be an active participant in state and national associations and/or be involved in community service.

The Pharmacy Student of the Year Award recognizes a student currently enrolled in a college of pharmacy who is a current member of ASP/CPhA. The person nominated for this award is active in the student chapter and has shown a willingness to become involved in the future of the pharmacy profession as evidenced by their involvement in CPhA and APhA professional activities. The 2001 Pharmacy Student of the Year was presented to Deborah Anderson from the University of California, San Francisco Coordinates:   School of Pharmacy. The 2001 Large Local Association of the Year Award was awarded to the San Diego County Pharmacists Association. SDCPhA 2001 President Aaron Swann accepted on behalf of the organization. The Local proved remarkably active in their community and has an exemplary network of pharmacists supporting grassroots legislative activities as well as numerous community activities.

Small Local Association of the Year

The Small Local Association of the Year Award recognizes a local association with less than 150 members which reaches out to their community. South Bay Pharmacists Association was awarded the 2001 Small Local Association of the Year Award. SBPhA 2001 President Lisa Johnson accepted on behalf of the organization, and was individually commended for her tireless efforts. This small local provides a fine role model for other small organizations in organizing fundraisers, providing student scholarships, and increasing participation in education programs, health faires and legislative meetings.
