California Pacific Medical Center Now a Heart Hope Center.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Heart Hope Offers Destination Therapy, an Implanted Mechanical Circulatory Heart Assist Device, to Persons with Heart Failure Who Do Not Quality for a Heart Transplant

California Pacific Medical Center California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) is one of the largest private, not-for-profit, academic medical centers in Northern California. The Medical Center is a combination of three of San Francisco's oldest medical institutions: Pacific Presbyterian Hospital, Children's Hospital  is pleased to announce that it is now a Heart Hope Center. As a Heart Hope Center, (www.hearthope.com) California Pacific offers the latest technology for treating heart failure, including Thoratec's HeartMate(R) LVAD LVAD left ventricular assist device; see ventricular assist device, under device.  -- an implanted mechanical circulatory heart assist device -- to persons with heart failure who do not qualify for a heart transplant (so-called "Destination Therapy"). The HeartMate(R) allows such patients to return to near-normal heart function.

HeartMate(R) is an implantable long-term LVAD designed to take over the pumping function of the heart. The fist-sized device uses titanium parts that do not destroy blood cells blood cells,

as blood flows through it, diminishing rejection and allowing for long-term usage. Destination Therapy can offer advanced heart failure patients an opportunity to restore functional status to a near normal state.

Heart failure occurs when heart muscle doesn't pump as much blood as the body needs. Failure doesn't mean the heart has stopped pumping -- rather, it simply means it's not pumping as effectively as it should. Nearly 5 million Americans are currently living with heart failure, with 550,000 new cases diagnosed each year.

The Heart Hope initiative is a collaboration between Thoratec Corporation (www.thoratec.com) headquartered in Pleasanton, California and leading heart centers committed to advancing clinical outcomes associated with mechanical circulatory assist devices and other advanced therapies in the treatment of heart failure.

California Pacific has already been using Thoratec's HeartMate(R) LVAD as a "bridge-to-transplant" therapy for patients waiting a donor organ.
