March was the second most active month of the decade for sales of newly-built homes in California, a real estate information service reported.

A total of 6,701 newly-built houses and condos were sold last month. That was up 38.9 percent from 4,823 for February, and up 23.1 percent from 5,443 for March last year, according to according to

"New home sales have not kept pace with sales increases in the resale category. Builders haven't built enough homes to keep pace with the rest of the market, so they're playing catch-up now,' said Mike Ela, leader of Acxiom's DataQuick Products Division.

Last year's strong Bay Area sales surge has moved into the rest of the state. Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  could see sales activity close to 1989 levels later this year.

Acxiom/DataQuick monitors real estate activity nationwide and provides information to consumers, educational institutions, public agencies, lending institutions, title companies and industry analysts. Although DataQuick monitored new home sales somewhat differently in the late 1980s, it's clear that the current sales pace is still somewhat behind the frenzy of a decade ago when sales statewide exceeded 8,000 during several different months in late 1989.

The median price paid for a newly-built home last month was $247,000 statewide. The median ranged from $130,000 in Fresno to over $400,000 in San Mateo San Mateo (săn mətā`ō), city (1990 pop. 85,486), San Mateo co., W Calif., on San Francisco Bay; inc. 1894.
