California Microwave Introduces the MRC CodeRunner Radios, the First Portable System for Analog, Digital and COFDM Newsgathering.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 16, 1999--

California Microwave, Inc. (Nasdaq National Market: CMIC CMIC CPU Management Interface Controller
CMIC Caucasus Media Investigations Center (Baku, Azerbaijan)
CMIC Combined Military Interrogation Center (Vietnam)

) announced today that its MRC See Maximum return criterion.  business area has introduced a major new system of digital and digital-ready microwave radio systems, the CodeRunner(TM) Series. The CodeRunner.2 mobile transmitter and the CR.4 Central Receiver are featured in the California Microwave booth (No. L21142) at the National Association of Broadcasters Convention in Las Vegas, April 19-22, 1999.

The CodeRunner products are designed to provide analog transmission capability within the pending 12 MHz channel plan at 2 GHz; the products are also designed to support digital modulation using 4FSK (Frequency Shift Keying) A simple digital modulation technique that uses two frequencies for 0 and 1. See frequency modulation. , QPSK (Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) A phase modulation technique that transmits two bits in four modulation states. See PSK and phase modulation. , and 16QAM (1) (Quality Assessment Measurement) A system used to measure and analyze voice transmission.

In addition to the CodeRunner radio platforms, the new MRC CodeRunner Series also includes the CM series of COFDM modulation and MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) An ISO/ITU standard for compressing digital video. Pronounced "em-peg," it is the universal standard for digital terrestrial, cable and satellite TV, DVDs and digital video recorders (DVRs).  compression products, based on products from NDS See eDirectory.

With the MRC CM COFDM and MPEG systems, the CodeRunner radios operate efficiently in severe multipath reflection environments, enabling live transmission in environments that typically cannot support live news shots. MRC, along with NDS, Wolf Coach, and Wescam, is featuring the CodeRunner products with COFDM transmission in live mobile news car and airborne transmissions during NAB 1999.

The CodeRunner.2 digital transmission system consists of a rack-mount control unit to be placed interior to the newscar or newsgathering van, and an RF unit that is placed adjacent to the transmit antenna. The two units are interconnected through a small, low-cost coax cable. Initial CodeRunner.2 units will be offered with a choice of internal analog or 4FSK modulators; external modulator options include QPSK, 16QAM, and COFDM systems.

The CR.4 Central Receiver is a companion to the CodeRunner.2, providing a rack-mount design for fixed central receive applications, with an initial choice of internal 4FSK or analog demodulators, and external QPSK, 16QAM, and COFDM systems.

The CodeRunner.2 and CR.4 systems are designed to interface with the entire range of MRC brand microwave antennas, including steerable directional, sector, and omnidirectional antenna systems.

The entire CodeRunner Series family is designed to support the television industry as it transitions to new channel plans and from analog to digital transmission techniques. Radios can be deployed to support analog applications initially and later be upgraded to support analog and digital operations. Initial deliveries of the CodeRunner.2 and the CR.4 central receiver will start in June 1999.

The MRC business area of California Microwave, Inc. is the leading US provider of analog and digital microwave systems for video transport applications. The company's EFData Product Group is a world-leading provider of satellite modems, including the new SDM-2020 series for digital video transport with a choice of QPSK and 8PSK (1) See preshared keys.

(2) (Phase Shift Keying) A simple digital modulation technique that uses two different phase angles for 0 and 1. Quadrature PSK (QPSK) uses four phase shifts for each two bits of input. See phase modulation and DPSK.
