9310 spread spectrum radios have been integrated into an automated distribution control system operated by the Long Island Lighting Company (LILCO LILCO Long Island Lighting Company ).

LILCO, has patented an electric power restoration and sectionalizing system that will automatically restore circuits and reduce power outages to LILCO customers.

900 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  Spread Spectrum Radios Reduce Installation Costs and Improve System Reliability

Microwave Data Systems' MDS 9310 license-free radios were selected to provide the primary communications links in this system. These radios link hundreds of remote switches scattered throughout Long Island, New York to regional control points. For over a year and a half, MDS 9310 radios have provided secure and reliable communications at a significantly lower cost than licensed radios or traditional wire technologies. Based on their success with this system and MDS radio products, LILCO plans on adding one hundred sites equipped with MDS 9310 radios in the near future.

In February 1996, LILCO received an award for the "Most Valuable Product" of the year at the Distribution Automation's DA/DSM conference. The "product" is an integrated package consisting of the MDS 9310 radio, data interface unit and control circuitry that is used in LILCO's automatic sectionalizing and restoration system. In the U.S.A., MDS 9310 900 MHz spread spectrum radios qualify under Part 15 of the FCC (1) (Federal Communications Commission, Washington, DC, www.fcc.gov) The U.S. government agency that regulates interstate and international communications including wire, cable, radio, TV and satellite. The FCC was created under the U.S.  Rules and Regulations and require no license for installation and operation. This quality, coupled with the interference tolerance of spread spectrum technology makes the MDS 9310 ideal for low-density local area networks.

Microwave Data Systems is a leading supplier of point-to-point and point-multipoint radios for data telemetry applications and low density point-to-point radios for data/voice and video applications. It has shipped some 100,000 data radios.

California Microwave Inc. is a leader in wireless communications. It is the number one U.S. supplier of microwave radios and telecommunications satellite earth stations. The company operates facilities in seven states and sells into more than 110 countries. Its strategy calls for significant expansion in the wireless area. The company's wireless and satellite communications operation are fully certified to the ISO (1) See ISO speed.
