California Leads U.S. in Manufacturing Job Loss.

Business Editors

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 30, 2003

A recent report published by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) stated that since July of 2000, California has lost 167,000 manufacturing jobs. Stated another way, California has lost one out of every twelve manufacturing jobs since July of 2000. This represents an 8.6% loss in California's total manufacturing employment. Compared with other states in the U.S., California has suffered the biggest loss.

), "The decline of jobs in California's manufacturing industry is a real loss for the California economy. Certainly the general economy is part of the reason of this loss. However, there are many people who believe that the state can and should do more to work with the business community. California can do more to help manufacturers learn new techniques that will allow them to grow and flourish. As the manufacturing sector grows, so will employment and the state's economy."

In an economy such as the present, many manufacturers experience stagnant sales and slow to no growth. However, manufacturers are learning today that by implementing techniques such as Lean manufacturing Lean manufacturing is the production of goods using less of everything compared to mass production: less human effort, less manufacturing space, less investment in tools, and less engineering time to develop a new product.  principles, manufacturers can cut costs in production by manufacturing products more efficiently. As manufacturers become more efficient, they become more productive and profitable, thus not having to lay off employees.

California's manufacturing industry is a powerful engine to the state's economy. Last year the manufacturing industry contributed over $179 billion to California's gross state product. Additionally, nearly 1.81 million Californians are employed in the manufacturing industry. These manufacturing jobs are high-paying jobs, averaging $49,661 annually as compared to the state average salary of $37,111 annually.
