California ISO Announces Transmission Emergency in Humboldt Area.

FOLSOM, Calif. -- The California ISO (1) See ISO speed.

The ISO declared a local transmission emergency and asked PG&E to call on voluntary interruptible customers to reduce the demand on the system. These large industrial customers receive a lower rate for electricity in exchange for reducing load during emergencies.

The peak demand for energy will come in the Humboldt area at about 8:00 this evening. PG&E is working to bring the generator that tripped off line back into service, but if that can not be done before the peak, it is possible that further local load reductions will be needed, possibly through the use of rotating outages.

If that becomes necessary it will affect ONLY the Humboldt County area. Conservation this afternoon can help reduce the likelihood the ISO will need to take that step. The ISO is urging electric customers in Humboldt County, including the towns of Eureka, Arcata, Ferndale and Fortuna, to reduce their energy consumption this afternoon through 9:00 p.m.

Turn off unneeded lights and appliances, wait until after 9:00 p.m. to use major appliances A major appliance is usually defined as a large machine which accomplishes some routine housekeeping task, which includes purposes such as cooking, food preservation, or cleaning, whether in a household, institutional, commercial or industrial setting.  like the washing machine (storage) washing machine - An old-style 14-inch hard disk in a floor-standing cabinet. Businesses can help as well by reducing some lighting, postponing any major use of electricity for manufacturing or other industrial processes, and turning off unneeded office equipment.

This advisory is based on the best data available at the time of its release. Grid conditions can change rapidly. Information about the electricity supply within the California ISO's control area and the current demand on the system is available at www.caiso.com.
