California ISDN Users' Conference shows rapid growth of interest in ISDN.SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 16, 1994--The California ISDN ISDN in full Integrated Services Digital Network Digital telecommunications network that operates over standard copper telephone wires or other media. Users' Group A users' group (also users group or user group) is a type of club focused on the use of a particular technology, usually (but not always) computer-related. conference "Using ISDN to Navigate the Information Superhighway" attracted more than 500 attendees to hear presentations about ISDN for work-at-home, international applications, the Internet, and private networks. This conference more than doubled the attendance of the CIUG CIUG Cognos International Users' Group conference held in June, indicating the rapidly growing interest in ISDN as a technology that supports a broad range of applications. The conference included exhibits by 35 vendors of ISDN applications and services. The high point of the conference was the first public demonstration of interoperability of ISDN bridges and routers using the Internet Engineering Task Force's PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) The most popular method for transporting IP packets over a serial link between the user and the ISP. Developed in 1994 by the IETF and superseding the SLIP protocol, PPP establishes the session between the user's computer and the ISP using MultiLink Protocol (PPP/ML). PPP/ML provides an industry standard method for communicating at wire speeds of 128kb/s and higher, at least seven times faster than popular V.32bis modems. Up until now only vendor proprietary protocols have been used to support these high speeds on ISDN networking products. At this meeting several vendors tested with each other and demonstrated the interoperability of their implementations of the PPP/ML protocol. They were able to connect their products and to run various networking applications using these ISDN connections. The testing done in preparation for the CIUG meeting helped the vendors to uncover minor problems with their PPP/ML implementations. This led to a demonstration of successful interconnections among these vendors using the PPP/ML standard protocol. The vendors participating in the testing and demonstration included: AccessWorks - Homdel, N.J. Ascend - Alameda, Calif. Digiboard - Eden Prairie Eden Prairie A city of eastern Minnesota, a residential suburb of Minneapolis. Population: 57,300. , Minn. Gandalf - Nepean, Ontario Nepean (pronounced "ne-PEE-yin") was a local municipality adjacent to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada until it was amalgamated with the 10 other municipalities that formed the Regional Municipality of Ottawa Carleton in 2001 to become the new city of Ottawa. , Canada ISDN Systems Corp. - Vienna, Va. KNX - Otley, West Yorkshire West Yorkshire, former metropolitan county, N central England. Created in the 1974 local government reorganization, the county largely embraced the Leeds conurbation and comprised five metropolitan districts: Calderdale, Bradford, Leeds, Wakefield, and Kirklees. , England. The CIUG will continue testing and demonstrating vendor interoperability using PPP/ML at its next conference that will be held in April in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, . The California ISDN Users' Group was formed to provide users with the information required for the successful design and implementation of ISDN applications. The CIUG publishes a quarterly newsletter and holds two conferences a year. The CIUG also works to identify and resolve issues in the use of ISDN. The CIUG can be contacted at 415/241-9943.
