READ California Background

Administered by the Governor's Office of the Secretary for Education, the READ California campaign is designed to encourage children and their parents to make reading a top priority early in life and to involve all Californians in the critical task of ensuring that children read every day.

The second year of the READ California campaign incorporated advertising, community and corporate outreach, a Kids Advisory Council, a statewide Readapalooza Too tour and a Web site at www.readcalifornia.org.

READ California is a result of legislation proposed by Governor Gray Davis and enacted by the State Legislature in the 1999 Special Legislative Session on Education. Authored by Secretary for Education Kerry Mazzoni, the bill, AB2X, encourages all Californians - parents, neighbors, businesses, and organizations - to do their part to promote reading.

Corporate sponsors for the READ California 2000 - 2001 campaign include America Online, Barnes & Noble Booksellers, California Lottery, Hewlett-Packard, Home Depot, Legoland, Nestle, the World-Famous San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo
