. Exports to Europe shot up $2.1 billion or 10 percent.

"Mexico clearly strengthened its position as California's second-largest export market in 1998," said Secretary Hatamiya. "Exports to our NAFTA partners (Mexico and Canada) were extremely helpful in offsetting the decreases in Asia."

In the first five years of NAFTA (1994-98), California exports to Mexico have more than doubled, increasing 104 percent or $6.8 billion. Secretary Hatamiya noted that state exports to No. 2 Mexico continue to be driven by exports of electronics and electrical equipment A piece of electrical equipment is a machine, powered by electricity and usually consists of an enclosure, a variety of electrical components and often a power switch. Exports to No. 3 Canada were buoyed by industrial machinery and electronics, which accounted for $7.2 billion, or 57 percent of total California exports to Canada. Since NAFTA's inception in 1994, California exports to Canada have increased 66.3 percent, or $5.1 billion.

Export growth to Europe ($23.2 billion) was spearheaded by the United Kingdom ($5.76 million, up 6 percent), Germany ($4.7 million, up 14 percent) and the Netherlands ($3.9 million, up 14 percent). European European
